Your vision could be in jeopardy, and you may not even be aware that anything is happening. Glaucoma is the term for a group of “silent” eye disorders often stemming from high intraocular pressure that can damage the optic nerve, cause peripheral vision loss and lead to blindness. This can occur when eye fluid doesn’t circulate normally.
At Cleveland Clinic Sugarbush Eye and Laser Centre, our team of Ophthalmologists and Optometrists is trained to identify glaucoma and provide treatment to manage the condition.
Types of Glaucoma
Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: the most common type that develops slowly with unnoticeable symptoms
Angle-Closure Glaucoma: occurring very quickly with obvious symptoms and damage
Normal-Tension Glaucoma: stemming from eyes without high eye pressure
Congenital Glaucoma: occurring in infants Symptoms of Glaucoma
Because glaucoma doesn’t always ave obvious symptoms, this is one more reason to have regular eye exams to identify such conditions. Symptoms can include:
- Cloudy vision
- Halo vision around lights
- Eye redness
- Decreased vision
Treatment of glaucoma focuses on lowering eye pressure using one or a combination of methods:
- Glaucoma eye drops
- Glaucoma laser surgery
- Glaucoma microsurgery
There are no steps you can take to prevent glaucoma, but it can be controlled if it is caught in the early stages. Contact us today to schedule a comprehensive eye exam and discuss your individual situation with one of our experienced Ophthalmologists or Optometrists.
